After rinsing the shampoo out, work a small amount through the coat, paying attention to the tail, the back of the legs, and anywhere that mats. Leave for a minute, a good moment to simply stand there with them, then rinse thoroughly.

Long, double and curly coats especially. Less suited to very short coats, where the benefit is marginal.
